The day after we got Moose, he was very sick; refusing any food, acting very lethargic, vomiting, and having bloody diarrhea. Having volunteered in an animal shelter, I suspected the worst: canine parvovirus, a.k.a. the puppy-killer. It was Sunday, but we found an emergency clinic that was open, and brought him in.

Thankfully, the test came back negative and his temperature was normal. The vet gave him subcutaneous fluids and shots for anti-nausea and antibiotics and we took him home. Almost immediately he was bouncing around a bit on the grass, and acting more like a normal puppy should.

Our current guess is that he ate something he shouldn't have while "lost" the day before, most likely pieces of a pinecone because he seems to have a fixation on chewing those and they have lots of sharp pieces that would be no good for a puppy's digestive system. No more pinecones for Moose!
